UX/UI Design for the feasibility of an AR Education App
Brief:
This case study explores augmented reality (AR) as a more holistic study aid solution for learners that respond well to It can take a lot of trial and error to find alternative audio and visual study techniques.
How do we engage students to increase their understanding of educational material?
I interviewed students to find out their pain points. Each student expressed interest in the subjects, but found that they couldn’t take notes and pay attention to live lectures simultaneously.
Consistently, students who wanted to learn needed multiple ways to practice (tactile, visual, auditory). Based on their needs, I created a proto persona:
Grace needs a multifaceted way to learn the material she needs. She uses technology and is interested in a technology aid. However schools may enforce analog note taking which may limit Grace’s ability to record class notes via her phone. While Grace is a proto persona, she is a great first step in creating a direction for the study aid.
Prototyping
To provide multifaceted learning, I decided to create audio, visual and tactile components to an augmented reality mobile application. AR was determined so the students could visually see their written notes while interacting with the other aids.
To accomplish this, I made a menu style interface for the student to click for audio and two separate animations. To pair the AR aids with the student notes, I decided to use imaging targeting via stickers.
Video of the prototype in action
This was my first project that included audio. I had to rerecord the audio several times to reduce both the feedback and the length of the clip.
I was happy with the progress but there are several things I would like to change in the next iteration.
The buttons should better match the tone of the app. Also if I intend to add additional topics or subjects, the buttons may need to be paired with the stickers instead of being paired with the screen.
Additional stickers for other educational topics are a must.
